What a rare find! Beautiful collectors piece! This is an infant carrier - used by medical facilities and midwives - to transport newborns. Produced by Wilkins Trunk Company of Dallas, (brass name plate) likely from the early to mid-20th century. It’s a metal and wood latch box with sliding viewing window, mesh screen on one end (very similar to today’s pet carriers), brass rivets and latches. While showing a bit of wear, I believe it is nearly identical to the one in the black and white photo in this listing. Inside are some (moth nibbled) baby shirts and a “mattress” pad, all stamped “Arkansas Department Of Health”. A second brass plate atop the carrier reads property of the same. It is a very sturdy piece with working latches and is fully functional. Acquired by me through the sale of an estate in which the closure of a small New Mexico doll museum was a part.
